Scholars, researchers, and engineers from more than 37 countries converged yesterday (8th of December) at Al Raha Beach Hotel in Abu Dhabi for the opening ceremony of “The 15th IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)”.
Organized for the first time in the capital by Abu Dhabi University’s College of Engineering with the support of Abu Dhabi Education Council and the University of Windsor in Canada, the symposium showcases more than 120 research papers discussing the best practices in signal processing and information technology. In its 15th edition, the ISSPIT is also supported by “The IEEE Signal Processing Society” and “The IEEE Computer Society”.
Addressing the symposium participants, H.E Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri Chairman of Abu Dhabi University’s Executive Board explained that it is a privilege for the University to organize this prestigious symposium for the first time in the capital.
“It is remarkable how much signal processing and information technology have advanced in the last decade to the benefit of mankind. This symposium will be the unique platform that allows each of us to witness this vital field’s advancement even further. Throughout the 21 sessions of this 3 day symposium, scholars, professors and researchers who hail from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and North America will present 120 peer reviewed research papers that embody cutting edge innovative research in the key areas of signal processing and information technology”.
Bin Harmal added: “Over a short period of time, the United Arab Emirates has transformed into a global hub for business, education, technology and innovation under the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahayan, President of the UAE and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahayan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Commander of the Armed Forces. This past year was a testament to the monumental and quick-paced development of the United Arab Emirates. 2015 presented a new era for our country, rallying the nation’s public and private organizations under the theme of “Innovation” as the UAE’s pathway to transforming into a knowledge-based economy”.
On his part, Professor Adel Al Maghraby Department Chair of the Computer Engineering and Computer Science in university of Louisville stressed that innovation comes from overlapping and joint work between different disciplines. “The 15th IEEE ISSPIT represents one of the best ventures between two of the largest societies of IEEE in the world, and will allow us a forum to bridge the gap between both disciplines in a manner that benefits the community and participates to the advancement of science and technology”, said Prof. Al Maghraby.
Commenting on the significance of the symposium, Professor Martina Newell, Division Manager for Research from Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) explained that the Council is dedicated to participating in developing a community that fosters a culture of creativity and innovation that transform the UAE into a knowledge- based economy. “ADEC’s support of the 15th IEEE ISSPIT is a smart investment that will help in the dissemination of science and knowledge and help in the advancement of scientific, academic and practical resources in the UAE, thereby contributing to the strategic mission of Abu Dhabi Government and its Economic Vision 2030” , added Prof. Newell.
The first day of the 15th IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT) also featured speeches by Professor Ahmad Tewfik Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas titled” The Next Frontier: Man-Machine Symbiosis”, and Dr. Ing. Walter Kellermann, from Friedrich-Alexander Universit ät Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany titled “Recent Advances in Acoustic Signal Processing for Natural Human/Machine Interfaces”, as well as 21 presentation of research papers divided over 6 different sessions.
