In recognition of its numerous philanthropic initiatives and its role as one of the leading financial institutions in the field of CSR, Bank Sohar has received the ‘Golden Order of Merit in the field of CSR’ Award from Excellence Awards Academy’s based in UAE.
The award was handed over to the Bank at the recently held 7th Social Responsibility Recognition Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner in Dubai.
This award marks the third award that the Bank has received from the Arab Organization for Social Responsibility for this category.
The prestigious award was handed over to the Bank at a glittering event held at the Murooj Rotana Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Pierre Moukarzel, President of the Arab Organization of Social Responsibility, and H.E. Dr. Mohammed Al Edwan, Ambassador of the Arab Cooperation. Receiving the award on behalf of the Bank were Mr. Nasser Saud Al Maawaly, DGM and Head of Internal Audit, and Ms. Mahira Saleh Al Raisi, Senior Chief Manager of HR. The prestigious event was also attended by representatives from various prominent institutions and dignitaries from the Arab world together with members of the Board of Trusts in the Arab Organization of Social Responsibility.
Sharing her thoughts on the Bank receiving such a prestigious award, Ms. Munira Abdulnabi Macki, DGM of Human Resources and Corporate Support, said, “We are honoured to have been once again recognised by the Arab Organization of Social Responsibility for our various CSR initiatives. Corporate social responsibility has always been at the core of our corporate philosophy. Through our initiatives, we hope to not only make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it, but also highlight the responsibility that organisations have towards their community , irrespective of their size of operation. This recognition has once again served to reinforce our determination to maintain our continuous focus on striving for excellence through sustainable corporate practices and policies.”
Over the past eight years Bank Sohar has made significant contributions towards community development across the Sultanate as well as several other causes across various fields; always placing great importance on the betterment of society. The Bank has also strongly supported those organisations and initiatives that selflessly serve the community and provide resources for people with special needs or make meaningful contributions that benefit the community as a whole. Bank Sohar also endorses social development and environment friendly practices in all facets of its business and designs its products, services and CSR programmes in line with its drive towards excellence.
Furthermore, the Bank strives to ensure that its contributions are carefully planned and evaluated in order to diversify and reach out to the maximum number of people, especially those in most need of it, offering recipients positive support to make a meaningful change. As a result, the Bank’s CSR initiatives have become central to its operational strategy. Over the years the Bank has supported a broad range of charitable organisations across the Sultanate. Last year alone the Bank supported a large number of such organisations including Dar Al Atta, Al Amal Association, Oman Road Safety Association, Association of Early Intervention for Children with Disabilities, Creative Centre for Rehabilitation, Al Wafa Social Centre for Children with Disabilities, Oman Association for the Disabled (Muscat and Sohar branches), Al Noor Association for the Blind (Sohar, Salalah and Muscat branches), the Oman Cancer Association, Oman Hereditary Blood Disorder Association, The Association for the Welfare of Handicapped Children together with its dedicated Autism Center, and the Omani Women’s Association, Sohar. The Bank also renewed its support to the Al Najah Education programme for the fifth consecutive as part of the 2014 initiatives.
For year 2015, Bank Sohar has already initiated its philanthropic initiatives by supporting the recently held Down Syndrome World Day 2015, organised by the Oman Down Syndrome Association (ODSA). Going forward, the Bank plans to continue in its steadfast quest of philanthropy with many more donations and charitable events planned for the current year and beyond.
The award marks the second award recognition for the Bank in 2015, having won the ‘Best Banking Performance’ Award at the fourth edition of the Al Roya Economic Award earlier this year, while this award marks the first CSR related award the Bank has received in 2015. However, the Bank’s CSR efforts and initiatives have already earned it numerous accolades over the past years; locally, regionally, and internationally including the ‘Green Campaign of the Year’ award at the ‘Oman Green Award 2014’, ‘Most Socially Responsible Bank Oman 2014’ by UK based International Finance Magazine (IFM), and the distinguished Tatweej Academy’s ‘Golden Order of Merit in the field of CSR’ at the Tatweej – Arab Leaders and Leading Organizations Grand Finale Ceremony 2014 in UAE. Inclusive of these awards Bank Sohar received in total 21 local, regional and international awards in 2014; with acknowledgements varying from financial excellence and growth to its unique products.
The Arab Organization for Social Responsibility is a Non-governmental organisation established to conduct researches and studies about the nature of Corporate Social Responsibility in the Arab region, and the goals that can be achieved by spreading this culture within Arab societies. It also works towards highlighting the role of CSR in achieving sustainable development in the fields of environment, tourism, economics, agriculture and manufacturing. The organisation works with ministries and public institutions in the Arab region to establish international standards for CSR in the region and encouraging local institutions to participate in international conferences and seminars on the latest standards for CSR the world over.
