In its effort to promote healthy living and competitive sports in the country, Bank Sohar, sponsored the recently held Oman Fighting Championship (OFC).
This non-profit sporting league showcased most martial arts available in Oman and put the spotlight on local competitors.
Organised by the Agency Design & Promo works and officially sanctioned by the world kickboxing federation, the much anticipated live premier event of the Oman Fighting Championship, was held at the Bahja Hall in Qurum on April 17, 2015.
Commenting on the tournament, Mr. Mazin Mahmood Al Raisi, AGM & Head of Marketing and Publicity at Bank Sohar said, “Bank Sohar has always been a strong supporter of sports in the Sultanate, both locally and on international level. Although Martial Arts has been well-known in the country, the sport has not possessed a platform to promote the profession. This tournament now forms a dais that will help local fighters showcase their skills and gain much needed exposure through such internationally sanctioned events.”
The private event, which saw a very impressive turnout from local fans and supporters, saw Omani fighters make up 90% of the total number of participants in the tournament. The event witnessed number of nail-biting fights, which culminated with the stunning OFC Middle Weight Championship bout between Hamood Al Tuhami and Moussa Al Harthy. The titanic showdown saw Hamood crowned as the new OFC Middle Weight Champion.
“On behalf of Bank Sohar, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the winners of each of the fights and most definitely Hamood Al Tuhami on winning the new title. I would also like to commend the sportsmanship, commitment and talent of each of the participants and look forward to seeing more of them in the future,” added Mr. Mazin Al Raisi.
Bank Sohar has always focused its efforts towards driving awareness and promoting both popular ports in the country. The Bank also places great emphasis on youth development, having sponsored several sporting events and youth teams across the country ranging from Go Karting, Football, Traditional Shooting Contests, Cricket and more.
Established in 2014, the OFC was established by The Agency Design & Promo works as a self-funded vehicle to help promote local clubs and martial artists and is run purely for the benefit of the local community by dedicated volunteers and associates. It was created as a medium to demonstrate their abilities in their respective sport in a structured and disciplined environment. With the support of its international affiliations OFC aims to act as a catalyst to promote local talent in the international arena.
OFC is open to all clubs in Oman but will initially cover K1 Kickboxing, Boxing and Muay Thai. There are plans in place to incorporate Ju Jitsu, Wrestling, Capoeira and full MMA bouts in their showcase, in conjunction with the support of the respective local clubs. All events are fully sanctioned by professional martial arts federations, and places qualified and overlooked by international and independent officials.
