Complex Made Simple

Brighton College Abu Dhabi hosts ‘Carnival of Music’ and ‘Market Day’

The profits earned from ‘Market Day’ are calculated by the children with half the amount donated for charity

Brighton College Abu Dhabi, a joint venture between the UK’s top co-educational school Brighton College and Bloom Education, hosted their ‘Carnival of Music’ where pupils dressed in bright and colourful clothing and performed to a selection of carnival-inspired musical compositions.

Alongside the ‘Carnival of Music’ Pre Prep hosted their annual ‘Market Day’ event which is the culmination of the children’s ‘Enterprise’ project where every child became an entrepreneur.

The children identified a potential customer base and choose appropriate products to manufacture and sell. As part of the event, children in FS1 develop simple business plans and learn to manufacture their goods.

The knowledge gained in FS1 is built on in FS2, Year 1 and Year 2 as pupils acquire a variety of skills; learning how to conduct market research, calculate costings and profit margins, advertise and package appropriately and the best ways to upsell their products and services.

The profits earned from ‘Market Day’ are calculated by the children with half the amount donated for charity. The remaining balance is allocated to the purchase of educational items that the children choose for their classrooms for their collective use.

Mrs. Jo Vigneron, Head Mistress of Pre Prep at Brighton College Abu Dhabi, said: “Extracurricular activities are an integral component of the world-class education program offered by Brighton College. In hosting such meaningful activities, we seek to expose children to a more diverse range of subjects and equip them with essential skills that enrich their learning process.”

Jo Vigneron added: “Market Day was an exceptional learning experience for our children, and introduced them to the world of work and money by encouraging them to develop innovative and entrepreneurial attitudes. We are confident that the experience and knowledge gained from this initiative will allow them to begin to develop financial understanding and hone skills that will ultimately serve to meet the broader needs of our global community.”
