Dubai hotel fire fails to stop New Year eve fireworks show

Inferno engulfed the 63-story Address Downtown hotel

A massive fire engulfed part of a luxury hotel in Dubai on Thursday (December 31) near where several hundreds of thousand people had gathered for spectacular fireworks show.

The inferno broke out at the five-star Address Downtown hotel failed to dampen the excitement of the party goers as Dubai went ahead with the with the New Year eve fireworks display.

The nine-ton fireworks kicked off at 12am at the Burj Khalifa tower, moving to the Business Bay Canal, and on to the Jumeirah coastline to the iconic Burj Al Arab, before it reached its peak in a six-minute and 20 seconds crescendo at The Beach by Meraas, opposite to Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR).

Dubai Media Office said the blaze that hit the 63-story hotel and residential building, had left 14 people with minor injuries.

Fire-fighters are still at the scene to carry out cooling procedures.

The cause of the fire is yet to be known.
