H.E. Hamad Buamim, Chairman of Hawkamah, will welcome the conference participants and H.E. Mohammed Ahmed Bin Abdul Aziz Al Shehhi, Undersecretary for Economic Affairs – Ministry of Economy, UAE will address the audience of the conference in the opening ceremony.

Commenting on the importance of the Conference, H.E. Hamad Buamim said: “Group company set up is a common phenomenon in the region. Whether family owned or state-owned, they are vital for the growth and sustainability of economies in our region. These companies, however, face different types of governance challenges and structure. It is therefore crucial that such companies view corporate governance as an enabler of better corporate performance and competitiveness.”

The title of this year’s conference is Creating Value through Governance – The Cases of State & Family Owned Enterprises.
It is widely recognized that good governance enhances the performance of companies by helping them make sound decisions and, in particular, to manage potentially damaging risks. While best practice has been elaborated at international level, it is harder to adapt this to groups, especially those where there is a controlling family or state shareholder.
The subsidiaries of such groups face a particular challenge which is frequently faced by regional companies. They need the independence and entrepreneurial freedom to generate value for their shareholders. Yet they must also remain accountable to the controlling state or family interest. The conference will explore how both sides can best respond.

The conference will feature prominent regional and international speakers including H.E Fatima Al Jaber, Peter Montagnon, Nick Hornung, Prof. Simon Wong, Bryan Stirewalt, H.E Mishal Kanoo, Dr. Sameer Al Ansari, Lubna Qassim, Hanan Ahmad, Rajesh Pareek, Nagesh Suryanarayana, Samer Al Haj, Shahzad Khan and others. The conference is expected to attract governance practitioners, owners, Board members, CEOs, CFOs and CROs, regulators, thought leaders, academics and members of the media from across the region and the world.

The conference this year is sponsored by regional and international partners with a strong commitment to corporate governance. The main sponsors include Protiviti, Boardvantage, ICSA Software, DP World, Azeus Convene, Bank of Sharjah, Diligent Boardbooks Ltd and the conference is also supported by Weil Gotshal & Manges, and CSR Arabia.
