Complex Made Simple

HMC highlights Cancer Care Services at NCCCR

The National Center for Cancer Care and Research’s (NCCCR) Radiation Oncology Department Director Dr Noora Al-Hammadi has reassured cancer patients that regardless of their nationality they will receive world-class treatment compared to elsewhere in the world.

The official was speaking against the backdrop of this year’s theme for World Cancer Day, which is to dispel myths about cancer.

She stressed the importance of timely, efficient and state-of-the-art cancer care and research available at Hamad Medical Corporation’s NCCCR – Qatar’s only specialized cancer care center.

“At NCCCR we are committed to ensure that all our patients, regardless of their nationality, receive the best available treatment compared to the treatment anywhere else in the world,” Dr Al-Hammadi said adding: “Patients can be assured that the standard of care they receive at NCCCR is world-class as the center supports HMC’s vision to improve and maintain the health of the population,” the official maintained.

A common misconception among many people suffering from cancer is “I do not have a right to cancer care.”

According to Dr Al-Hammadi, this is not the case and may in fact obstruct the path towards seeking efficient treatment and recovery.

The sooner a person starts to receive appropriate cancer care, the better the chances are for effective treatment and cure, she pointed out.

Dr Al-Hammadi explained that another common myth about cancer: “there is nothing I can do about cancer” can create unreasonable fear of the disease, coupled with unnecessary suffering for the individual.

“The most important thing for a person who suspects they might have cancer is to seek medical attention early, to engage with your physician and understand the treatment options available,” she said.

At NCCCR, state-of-the-art facilities for diagnosis including radiation therapy and treatments for all types of cancers are available with all patients being discussed in one of the 13 multidisciplinary teams who deal with specific cancer types.

“The Radiation Oncology Department is equipped with state-of-the-art imaging and radiotherapy machines. Such advanced machines that enable physicians to confirm and assess the exact tumor position within the patient’s body through focused images.” Dr Al-Hammadi said.

“This allows us to treat tumors with pin-pointed accuracy, protecting the health tissue around the tumor,” she added.

Although, some people may experience no symptoms in the initial stages of cancer, common symptoms that should raise an alarm can be remembered as CAUTION: Change in bowel or bladder habits, A sore that does not heal, Unusual bleeding or discharge, Thickening or lump in the breast, testicles or elsewhere, Indigestion or difficulty swallowing, Obvious change in the size, colour, shape or thickness of a wart, mole or mouth sore, Nagging cough or hoarseness.

In addition, unexplained rapid weight loss is also one of the symptoms that should prompt a person to seek medical advice. Should you be concerned, the first place to go is your family doctor.

“It is highly important that we all participate in screening programs for cancer and undergo annual check-ups with our families to ensure they are healthy and free of cancer,” Dr Al-Hammadi emphasized.
