Horouf Educational Publishing, the newly established education focused imprint of Kalimat Publishing Group, celebrated World Arabic Language Day with a writing and illustration workshop for children aged 7 to 9 years held at GEMS Royal Dubai school on the 18th of December.
Speaking about the workshop, Tamer Said, Business Development Manager at Kalimat Publishing Group said, “Horouf’s primary aim is to foster a love for the Arabic language amongst the next generation. In light of this, the celebration of World Arabic Language Day is the perfect opportunity to demonstrate to the younger generation that Arabic, as a language, is both internationally relevant and a valuable means for expression and communication. Through workshops such as this one we want to show children that they can have fun while using Arabic and encourage them to be creative and think outside the box.”
The workshop, which took its theme from the UAE flag, featured two sections. In the first, students were guided to write an original story inspired by the illustrations of Horouf Big Books and Imrah series. The second part of the workshop focussed on developing the students illustration skills giving them the opportunity to create illustrations through a group painting.
Malak Obeid, Author of Imrah series and supervisor of the workshop said: “The UAE flag is one of the strongest symbols of this country’s pride in being an Arab nation and as such is inextricably linked to pride in our language, which is why it was the perfect choice for the workshop’s theme.”
Established in 2010 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), World Arabic Language Day aims to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six of UNESCO’s official working languages.
