What if a KFC drone showed up on your doorstep?

Rushing to your airport gate, but feeling hungry and can’t wait in lines? Well, no need to worry about that anymore in Dubai.

Food delivery firm Deliveroo and Dubai Airports have launched the region’s first-ever airport delivery service at Dubai International (DXB).

DeliverooDXB allows passengers to get freshly prepared food delivered straight to their boarding gates within minutes of ordering.

Just use the application, website or the airport’s WiFi welcome page to place an order.

“Deliveroo’s mission is to provide the best food delivery experience in the world, and there is no reason why that should be limited to the home or office,” Anis Harb, Deliveroo GCC’s General Manager was quoted by the media as saying.

Food delivery service in Dubai and worldwide has evolved throughout the years, providing consumers with innovative solutions and making their lives much easier.

Promising industry

According to Hotelier Middle East, a hospitality news portal, UAE’s ever-growing home food delivery market is currently valued at AED 12.9 billion ($3.5 billion).

BAWS, an online lifestyle magazine, states that the products that are mostly trending for delivery in the UAE are organic seasonal fruits and vegetables and fast food, with many online restaurant directories catering a list of restaurants that offer multi-cuisines in Dubai.

Meanwhile, McKinsey, a management consulting firm, reveals that the business of delivering restaurant meals to the home is undergoing rapid change, as new online platforms race to capture markets and customers across the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Worldwide, the market for food delivery stands at €83 billion, or one per cent of the total food market, and four per cent of food sold through restaurants and fast-food chains, according to McKinsey.

It said that the rise of digital technology was reshaping the market.

“We expect online delivery to grow by 25.0 per cent per year from 2015 to 2018 in key markets, after which it will taper off to 14.9 per cent per year until 2020,” it said.

McKinsey’s report applies to the UAE, as more people are going digital when it comes to shopping and not just to the food industry.

Going digital

A number of e-commerce platforms offering a wide range of products from clothes to electronics and apparels were launched in the past few years in the UAE to cater to the growing segment of people demanding online products and home delivery.

Some of these websites include, which was recently launched and, owned by Amazon.

In November 2016, UAE e-commerce firm began offering same-day delivery in Dubai, while it expanded these services to other countries this year.

Global consultancy firm AT Kearney says that the region can be considered as an inviting market for e-commerce, since it is home to many people with large disposable incomes and has some of the world’s highest levels of GDP per capita.

Also, a study released by PwC in 2016 states that an increasing number of online shoppers in the UAE are ready to pay more for same-day delivery.

In its Total Retail Middle East 2016 report, Consultancy PwC said that 63 per cent of those surveyed in the UAE said that they were willing to shell out more money for products to be delivered on the same day.

Food delivery and e-commerce platforms have become ordinary in the region today.

But what’s new is the drone delivery technology, which will be launched in Dubai between 2018 and 2019.

Drone delivery

According to media statements, Dubai-based Eniverse Technologies has teamed up with Skycart, a San Francisco-based drones company, to create Space Autonomous Drones, which will target the logistics and delivery industry.

Space Autonomous Drones are currently seeking legal approval from the Dubai Government, with an official launch date forecast to take place between 2018 and 2019.

The statement revealed that Space Autonomous Drones said that it aimed to strike collaborations with companies such as Emirates Post, Souq, DHL, Amazon, UPS, Aramex and Alibaba Group.

The company said in a statement that it would offer smart drones shipping solutions with cost savings and faster delivery times.

Mall delivery
A media statement released in June 2017 reveals that Majid Al Futtaim has officially launched its Hands Free Shopping service at Mall of the Emirates, as part of its commitment to enhance the shopping experience through innovation.

“The service invites shoppers to drop off their shopping bags and collect them later or have them delivered anywhere at their convenience,” it said.

“The service is the first of its kind in the region introduced at Mall of the Emirates and according to a mall survey, customer satisfaction is already at 95 per cent with many customers praising the ‘wow’ effect of getting their bags delivered at the click of a button in a few minutes anywhere, anytime. The remaining five per cent of respondents were pleased with the overall service,” it added.
