The Environment Society of Oman (ESO), in collaboration with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), kicked off the 4th Inter-College Environmental Public Speaking Competition (ICPSC) at the Muscat Holiday Hotel.
Opened under the auspices of H.E. Dr. Rawya bint Saud al-Busaidi, Minister of Higher Education, the competition is set to enhance the public speaking capabilities of students from across Oman by challenging their ability to address environmental topics.
H.E. Dr. Rawya bint Saud al-Busaidi, Minister of Higher Education, praised the competition and the efforts of integrating the concept of concern for the environment among the educational sector and youth community.
She said, “I applaud the efforts of the Environment Society of Oman to spread environmental awareness in all segments of society and I also salute the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG), which collaborated in the success of this competition throughout the previous years.”
Day one witnessed the evaluation of 20 out of 40 teams on four diverse environmental themes: Sustainability our Responsibility: it’s no longer an option, From Global to Local: Environmental Regulation and Economic Integration, ‘Overpopulation vs Overconsumption: where should we focus?’ and ‘Environment and Development: Conflict or Harmony?’. The four winning teams will go on to represent Oman in the regional finals in Dubai on the 25th-26th of November 2015.
ESO’s expert panel of judges included Abdul Aziz Abdulla Al Midfaa, Vice Chair Person of the Emirates Environmental Group; Yasser Sulaiman, Former District 20 Governor, Toastmaster International; Ali bin Amer Al Kiyumi, Adviser for Nature Conservation at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs, Dr. Abdulaziz Al Marzooqi, Director of Marine Science & Fisheries Center and Dr. Lubna Al Kharusi, Director General of Fisheries Research at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAFW), Dr. Asadullah bin Ahmed Al Ajmi, Academic Advisor at the Ministry of Higher Education and Atiya Al Mamaari, Academic Program Advisor.
Hussam Al-Nabhani, Vice President Social Responsibility and External Affairs at Occidental of Oman, commented, “Occidental Oman’s support for this initiative is part and parcel of its commitment to environmental stewardship and efforts to encourage youth to develop and thrive. The competition has been an essential platform that has helped cultivate a new generation of Omanis that understand the importance of biodiversity.”

This initiative not only helps youth enhance their public speaking skills, but gives them an opportunity to showcase their knowledge through presentations and the power of speech.”
