Over 16 million Egyptians are illiterate

According to official figures released by the Egyptian government, the total number of illiterate people aged 10 years or more in the country has exceeded 16 million in 2012, Al-Masry Al-Youm has reported. Of those, around 10.3 million are females. Illiteracy rates among youth aged 15 to 24 reached 8.5%, while people aged 60 or more had a 62.3% illiteracy rate, the data showed.
