Sustainability tops Dubai’s urban planning agenda

As Dubai starts work on its first ever smart city for Emirati residents this month, sustainable urban design is topping the UAE’s urban planning agenda. Discussing some of the key urban development questions in the run up to 2020, experts from across the region will gather in Dubai later this month to share their expertise and recommendations at this year’s Outdoor Design, Build and Supply Exhibition “31 March – 2 April 2014 at Dubai World Trade Centre”.

Organised by Streamline Marketing Group, the three day Outdoor Design, Build and Supply Exhibition unites top industry experts for a series of panel discussions answering key questions such as: how can the UAE execute sustainable landscaping? What are the core principles of sustainable urban design? How will Expo 2020 affect Dubai’s urban geography? And what does 2020 Dubai look like?

“The outlook for infrastructure, and with that, outdoor planning, is at an all-time high,” said Thea Skelton, Divisional Director at Streamline Marketing Group. “As Dubai embarks on its next wave of rapid development, with renewed global confidence in infrastructure projects peaking since the worldwide financial crash, architects and master developers need to ensure the city is growing in an environmentally responsible and sustainable way,” explained Thea.

“We are facilitating a wider discussion about how the industry can not only deliver liveable urban design, but one that is efficient whilst also being sustainable. The show provides a platform for encouraging industry dialogue about how Dubai can achieve the vision it has laid out for itself,” Thea said.

As part of the Outdoor Design, Build and Supply Exhibition, the Urban Agenda 2020 conference aims to pose solutions to ensure the safeguarding of Dubai’s future environmental, economic and social needs of its growing population. The results of two strategy session held at the event will be published formally through a white paper. “One of the key discussion topics we are looking to address is what Dubai’s growth around 2020 means for current projects in the immediate and near future,” Thea continued. “With 270,000 new jobs expected as a result of hosting World Expo, we want to spark discussion amongst current developers and planners on how existing projects can become more mindful towards the city’s future needs,” Thea added.

The Outdoor, Design Build and Supply Exhibition will also feature several high-profile speakers to discuss more niche aspects of sustainable urban planning, including greening roof and wall space, sustainable irrigation, horticulture and parks, and innovative composting. Confirmed speakers taking part in the event include Ralf Stahl, Managing Director of Zeoplant; Lucille A Ong, CEO of Design Unlimited LLC and Nadine Bitar, Founder of Place Making.

More than 120 international and regional brands will be showcased at the Outdoor Design, Build and Supply Exhibition 2014 – the only trade event of its kind in the region – including: Mister Shade; Bluestream Environmental Technology LLC; Gulf Development and Construction LLC; Orient Stone Technology Factory; Gulf Landscape and Irrigation Systems LLC; Green and More, and Gulf Gardens. The Outdoor Design, Build and Supply Exhibition runs at the Dubai World Trade Centre 31 March – 2 April 2014, including the Urban Agenda 2020 conference.
