Unemployment in GCC blamed on poor education system

According to a study by Booz & Company, unemployment among GCC youth is mainly caused by a 'faulty' educational system that has failed to prepare them for the job market, Muscat Daily has reported. Youth in the region often lack the skills required to succeed, especially in the private sector, partly because manual work as part of vocational training is still considered socially undesirable in most GCC countries, something that is often left to school dropouts, expatriates, and those from low-income backgrounds, said the report. The study recommended that GCC stakeholders should take a number of steps to redress this situation including revamping public education systems, in partnership with chambers of commerce and industry leaders, so as to make the system more flexible to the needs of the labour market.
