The trend of decluttering is on the rise. Who would have thought that the daily mundane chore of every day cleaning would turn into an art of decluttering? With celebrities like Marie Kondo, who have turned decluttering into an essential skill, it is interesting to find out how decluttering, in respect to business, will make it more successful.
Joseph Ferrari, a professor of Psychology, at DePaul University in Chicago published a study in which he found a substantial link between procrastination and clutter. Sorting through true and tossing items is a task many people find unpleasant but when they actually finish it, the results are astounding and gives them sense of achievement and mental calmness. Procrastination plays havoc on workplace productivity.
When you have loads of stuff accumulating on your desk, it doesn’t help much with productivity as your mind keeps running to the clutter. If your brain is feeling burdened by too many thoughts and you are unable to use your time to meet your deadlines effectively, it is always good to clear out your surroundings so that the spatial clarity will give you mental clarity and make your mind focus on ways to overcome each hurdle you face.
The hardest part of decluttering is the sentiments we have attached to the objects around us. We refuse to accept that we may not need it anymore and cling on to material things not realizing that we need to love people and just use things, not the other way around. Once you declutter, it will always create a positive reinforcement and a sense of accomplishment that if you were able to do this well, you would be able to do anything well. To get started on decluttering, minimalistic ideas are important. The less things you have around you, the more space you will have, giving you room to breathe and think laterally. Maintaining a steady routine will ensure that the clutter stays away and your mind stays on track.
Not just things, decluttering is important emotionally as well for your mental health. Clinging on to memories and constantly ruminating about them will only increase stress and disrupt focus. Once we deactivate this, we will be much calmer and focus on things at hand.
Businesses run successfully only when employees are focused on the tasks at hand and look at creative ways to overcome hurdles. That would be possible only if there is no clutter holding them down. Decluttering the calendar and email inbox are top tasks that require immediate and constant attention so that we can concentrate on fruitful associations leading to generation of good business. Digital declutter is equally important for brands and businesses to stay up-to-date and ensure that the latest of their work is being projected not some older work. So switch off notifications on phone and computer, and stay off personal items while at the work place.
Decluttering is not a binge process. We need to consciously incorporate this into our daily routine and ensure that it helps us stay focused on the things that actually matter.
