If you thought health and wellness was all about diets and gym workouts, think again. Today, health and wellness have come to mean a robust mix of dance (aerial and classical), drama, performing arts, music lessons, group exercises, live DJs, karaoke sessions, meditation, yoga and pilates, not to mention counseling, customized workout sessions and body composition analysis. Think we’re kidding? Read on…

Picture this

You’re home after a long day at work-stressed, angry and frustrated. But now’s not the time to curl up on the couch and mope. Rather, this is the moment to let it all out: Sing your heart out, dance like no one’s watching, box it out against a pillow, or simply run a few laps. The catch: Your home is tiny and there’s hardly any room to move; forget dance. There’s also the danger of incurring the neighbor’s wrath if your loud, unruly musical notes filter through the thin walls. So what do you do? If you’re in Dubai, a visit to StudioRepublik, the city’s newest health and wellness destination, will convince you that letting it out is not a bad thing, after all. That you’re safe and sounds are encouraged.

Conceived as an integrated physical and emotional health platform, StudioRepublik makes an earnest attempt to break existing notions of fitness centres and create an environment for people to bring out their inner selves and express themselves in ways that make them comfortable, happy and relaxed.

Ali El Amine, the man behind this unique concept, says he was inspired by Dubai’s massive interest in health, coupled with the need in this region for a holistic approach to living, integrating the physical and mental space.  “StudioRepublik is more than just a gym or a sports center-it is a community health and wellness initiative that caters to just about everyone interested in enriching the quality of their life,” Ali said. “Here, at StudioRepublik we’ve left no stone unturned to ensure that whatever one needs to feel completely fit, is all available under one roof.”

Ditching that couch

One thing’s for sure: A visit to StudioRepublik will make you cut ties with your couch leaving it filled with debris of a wasted, lethargic life. You will now want to move around, see and feel things, and maybe even learn new stuff. You may be a complete novice to the fitness scene, or not know a single musical instrument out there-but at StudioRepublik, that’s all taken care of. “We encourage beginners to come to us-there is room for everyone. Also, should you wish to not learn anything but work out or meditate in private-we have facilities that take care of that, too. If you don’t feel fit, come to StudioRepublik to feel fit. It’s an informal place to bond, feel free and let your creative side take over.”

One can’t help but be overwhelmed by a feeling of calm expansiveness when entering StudioRepublik. Everything about it speaks fitness, finesse, class and culture. Rooms perspire with creative decorative muscle, and smart lighting fits the mood of timeless moments, and it’s where ample space and bursting energy beckon you to try out sleek equipment strutting with pride. Strangely, there is a tiny pinprick of guilt, too-why haven’t I paid attention to my fitness goals? I didn’t know staying healthy could feel this good! Oh how my couch will miss me!

This basically means that people have realized that physical activity needs to be balanced with calmer, deeper, self searching activities, in order to be truly fit and happy. “That’s what we’re  here for-to make you find that inner you and bring out the best in you,” Ali added. “If a human being has lived all his life not realizing his full potential, then that is sad and disappointing. At StudioRepublik, we encourage you to be a better version of yourself-to dream, to explore, to express and to soar."
