Qatar to begin construction of first World Cup stadium 'soon'

Qatar has announced that construction of the country's first new football stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup is set to start soon, the Peninsula has reported. The new stadium will be built inside Qatar Foundation (Education City) and is expected to be completed in 2015, said the secretary general of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrehman Al Thani. Qatar had won the rights to host football's showpiece event in 2022 after beating bids from the US, Japan, England, South Korea and Australia more than two years ago. In the bid file, the country pledged to build five new stadiums including an 80,000-seater Lusail Iconic Stadium.
