Qatar's first polysilicon plant to be completed next year

Qatar has announced plans to set up its a polysilicon manufacturing plant, a basic component of solar panel cells, as part of a strategy to shift to solar energy, the Peninsula has reported. To be opened in Las Laffan in 2013, the plant will be a venture that is 70% owned by Qatar Solar Technologies (QSTec), a subsidiary of the Qatar Foundation, and will produce 8,000 metric tonnes of polysilicon annually. "Our plans are to move along the value chain, making ingots, wafers, cells, and modules here in Qatar," said QSTec.
