The UNAUAE opens its call starting May 30 for secondary school and university youth participants to join its inaugural U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Challenge: “SDGs of Summer” seeking ideas and creative solutions to the global community’s most pressing problems by 2030.

The United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals are aspirations for the world to meet between 2016 and 2030 devised by nations across the globe – including direct input and contributions from the government of the UAE.

In honor of Ramadan and the concept of ‘sacrifice’, the focus for the first month of June will be SDG Number Two (SDG2): No Hunger. Two more Challenges will run in July (SDG1: No Poverty) under the theme of ‘selflessness’ and in August (SDG3: Health and Well-being) under the theme of ‘sunshine’.

Participation in the SDG Challenges is free and UAE students from the nation's secondary/high schools and universities can form or be placed on teams of up to six delegates to brainstorm innovative solutions toward the Global Goal(s).

Teams will draft a presentation around their ideas and the top 10 teams, vetted prior by a special SDG Youth Solutions Committee, will convene in Dubai on June 29th to present their Solutions at a special SDG2 Briefing to a panel of esteemed UAE leaders and diplomats who will determine the top three most innovative and viable concepts. As the SDGs call for global inclusion, an audience of peers, family, and community will also be welcome to attend on a first come first serve basis.

According to Lisa La Bonté, Secretary-General of UNAUAE,“The holy month of Ramadan affords a blessing in the form of the sacrifice of fasting. It's through this abstinence that we learn empathy and what if feels like to go hungry - the pain and limitations, albeit for a short time. The SDG Challenge environment will support youth to thrive within and alongside diverse teams developing creative solutionsto real-world dilemmas and crises.”

Teams will win prizes and all who participate will receive United Nations Association UAE Certificates. For further information, a brochure and to register,www.TheSDGsChallenge.com or email [email protected]
