Egypt to buy train carriages from China for $500m

Egyptian transportation minister Hatem Abdel-Latif has said the country will import 760 train carriages worth $450-500m from China in a bid to develop the railway sector, Ahram has reported. The minister said that around 80% of the country's train carriages are dilapidated and need to be upgraded. Egypt has allocated around EGP15.7bn ($2.2bn) for the 5,000 kilometres of railway track nationwide in the current budget, which will end by June 30, up 20% over the last fiscal year.
