Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Islamic Port (JIP) has announced plans to spend $266.6m on upgrading its facilities to handle an increasing amount of cargo and seasonal backlogs, Arab News has reported. The port, which handles over 65% of the traffic entering the kingdom from the sea, handled 62 million tonnes in 2012, up 20% over the previous year. The projects include the expansion of Route 8, upgrading the electric power system, construction of a multi-storey car park that will accommodate more than 17,000 cars, as well as the construction of new admiration building, and the upgrade of drainage and fire alarm systems.
