Opel to shut down 50-year old plant

Opel has approved the closure of its car plant in Bochum, the first such move by a German carmaker in decades, Reuters has reported. As part of a comprehensive turnaround plan, General Motors' loss-making European brand will end production of Zafira minivans at its 50-year old plant by the end of 2014. The plant closure is a key element in management's strategy to achieve profitability in 2015 at the earliest, after what will by then be 15 straight years of losses for GM in Europe.
