Schengen countries tighten security checks

The Schengen Area, which comprises the territories of 26 European countries, has announced residents looking for Schengen visas from Oman are now to go through electronic fingerprinting and biometric scanning prior to departure, Times of Oman has reported. The German Embassy in Muscat said the Schengen States' Visa Information System (VIS) became operational in North Africa on October 11, 2011 and in the Middle East on May 10, 2012. "The system will go live in the Gulf region on October 2," said the embassy.
