Telecom operators in Jordan oppose income tax, electricity hikes

Telecoms operators in Jordan have said that an imminent increase in electricity prices and the government's plan to raise the income tax on the sector will jeopardise its future, Jordan Times has reported. The increase in taxes on telecoms firms from 25% to 40%, as stipulated in the draft income tax law, will pressure operators to cut down costs, leading to a decline in investments, revenues and recruitment, said the CEOs of Zain Jordan, Orange Jordan and Umniah. They also said that none of them will bid for a tender offered by the Telecoms Regulatory Commission to provide Fourth Generation (4G) services.
