Abu Dhabi will open its second runway and an interim terminal 'within a few weeks'. The second runway is 2km from the first and so able to operate simultaneously, increasing the number of planes that can take off and land at the airport. The interim terminal is for national carrier Etihad and can handle five million passengers a year. It will eventually be replaced by the mid-field terminal, which is dues for completion in 2011. At that point the airport will be able to handle 20 million passengers, and an official said its blueprint allows for an expansion that could cope with up to 50 million passengers in the future, should it be needed.
