Lively Greenery
Plants can add a lot of organic character to an otherwise drab office environment. Having small indoor plants will improve the air quality and remove impurities while adding a focal point to your work environment. You can also use large houseplants to create helpful separations between workplaces — and a source of peaceful contemplation during your hectic day. Research carried out by Texas A&M University, Surrey University and Washington State University, revealed plants significantly lower workplace stress and enhance productivity.

Essential Scents
Essential oils not only help improve job performance but health, meaning employees are less likely to take sick time. Essential oils have anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties and using them in an environment where there are a lot of people can help to keep germs at bay. Inhaling essential oils activates the hypothalamus – the area of the brain which sends messages to other parts of the body. A simple inhalation of an aroma can cause many changes in the body, including activating the immune system, affecting blood pressure and stimulating digestion.

Let the Light In
The architectural design of office environments should place more emphasis on sufficient daylight exposure of the workers in order to promote office workers’ health and well-being. Psychologists agree that too much artificial light reduces cortisol levels, making it harder to manage daily stress. Natural sunlight, on the other hand, can help keep employees more alert and productive. Good office lighting should supplement natural light, not overpower it. Colour not only affects a person’s mood, but it can also hinder a worker’s effectiveness. Research has found that employees working in white rooms make more mistakes. Colors can elicit a variety of emotions, affecting the mood and output of your staff. Colour is usually divided into two categories: warm and cool tones. Warm tones, like red, orange and yellow can energize a space and its occupants. Cool tones such as blue, green and purple generally create quiet, relaxing atmospheres. Choose your colors according to the purpose of your space.

Furniture Matters
Lounge furniture is great, but not necessarily for long hours of work. Provide tables and power around the office in a more relaxed setting so that employees can be productive if they choose to not have a traditional work surface like a desk. Ensure you invest in good quality chairs and don’t cut corners with price – chairs are vital to your health when working 40-hour desk jobs. Make sure you give people the option to sit or to stand. Again, it is health related and standing to work is becoming increasingly popular. Give people options.
