Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee (TDC) and Intel Corporation announced the signing of an official agreement enabling both entities to share best practices and connect their respective state-of-the-art facilities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
The agreement, unveiled at the recent opening of TDC’s INNOVATOR Space, will allow members of the INNOVATOR Space who are developing advanced projects in the Internet of Things (IoT) domain to access Intel’s Internet of Things (IoT) Ignition Lab in Silicon Oasis, Dubai, and to receive support from expert staff over there.
Intel’s specialists will also be conducting regular training and demonstration activities opened to everyone on the topics of IoT and circuit programming within TDC’s INNOVATOR Space.
The Internet of Things is a global megatrend that is leading to having any electronic device, anywhere (at home, in factories, offices, etc.) connected to the internet, and/or each other, creating a huge network of ‘things’ which also includes people. It is expected that by 2020 there will be over 26 billion connected devices (source: GARTNER).
Ahmed Saeed Al Calily, Director General of TDC commented: “We are delighted to collaborate with Intel to increase awareness and catalyze innovation around the Internet of Things which is one of the main global trends transforming economy and society. As part of our efforts to drive human capital in the science and technology sectors, we place utmost emphasis on educating the community on developments in the industry and how that can affect their future careers. Working with a global player such as Intel to share best practices and engage on transformational topics such as IoT is a strong contribution to realizing the Abu Dhabi economic vision.”
The agreement also seeks to identify areas for further collaboration between the two entities, which could leverage the facilities and human resources from Intel’s IoT Ignition Lab.
Nassir Nauthoa, GCC Country Manager, Intel explained: “For over a decade Intel has been committed to supporting young innovators through investments in science and technology and entrepreneurships to build a more competitive workforce in the Arab world. By providing the adequate technologies and resources through entities like TDC’s INNOVATOR Space we are helping to develop the ecosystem and contribute to transforming ideas into solutions.”
INNOVATOR Space opened during UAE Innovation Week and has received numerous plaudits from across the region. The 1000 m2 Space is the GCC’s first open access ‘maker’ space, designed and operated in partnership with TechShop, the leading operator of “makers spaces” in the USA and globally. Equipped with professional grade equipment and staffed by training professionals, the facility provides affordable access to cutting edge technology such as 3D printers, laser cutters, welders, various computer numerical controlled (CNC) machines, and many more, in addition to CAD/CAM state of the art software – as well as specialized training programmes for all levels of skill and hands-on support and mentoring to transition ideas into prototypes and products.
