DHL plays leading role in country’s environmental drive with launch of CNG-fuelled vans to its fleet

DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, will add two Compressed Natural Gas powered vans (CNG) to its express delivery fleet in the UAE next month.

This launch is aligned to DHL’s overall global GoGreen strategy of reducing the company’s carbon footprint by 30% by 2020, compared with the base level in 2007. The GoGreen environmental programme is a permanent component of the company’s strategy and has recently celebrated its fifth anniversary since its launch in 2007. Its results are reflected in areas such as energy and paper reduction, and now, with the launch of these two CNG vans, fuel consumption.

The Transporter Delivery Van, distributed in Dubai by Al Nabooda Automobiles, is the only Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle to be powered by this environmentally friendly natural gas. The CNG-fuelled vans will produce on average 70% less carbon monoxide, 87% less non-methane organic gas and 87% less nitric oxide than traditional gasoline powered vehicles. Not only will this be contributing to the environment but CNG vans will help cut business costs as the gas used is priced less than average fuel.

Frank-Uwe Ungerer, Country Manager for DHL Express UAE, said: “As the leading logistics company in the UAE, it is important for us to continuously improve our carbon footprint consumption and we are proud to support the UAE’s environmental drive and our overall plan to reduce DHL’s carbon footprint across the world. We are delighted to test the performance of the CNG vans in the UAE and are confident this initiative will be a success – we hope to convert more of our vans in the years to come.”

Thierry Seys, General Manager, Al Nabooda Automobiles, the sole distributor of Volkswagen in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, said: “The Transporter Delivery Van offers a practical, alternatively-fuelled choice for environmentally-conscious van operators. We have a responsibility to take care of our planet and preserve its resources and strength for future generations so it’s great to see a leading logistics company like DHL playing an important part in this.”

DHL’s successful GoGreen programme was launched by Deutsche Post DHL and is the first logistics company in the world to set a measurable climate protection. Not only has the company taken steps to improve its carbon footprint, DHL is also helping its customers do the same with green products and services. In 2012 more than 2.4 billion GoGreen shipments were sent and about 180,000 tons of CO2 were offset for customers, this is about 30% more than 2011 and over three times as much as 2009.
