Dubai World Hospitality Championship 2014 kicks off today

Dubai World Hospitality Championship 2014 kicked off today (Thursday, October 30, 2014) at the Dubai World Trade Centre, under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. The opener was attended by His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a number of VIPs, highly skilled chefs from around the world, prominent personalities from the artistic and sports field, and well- known media figures.

An operetta was organized today on the sidelines of day one of the Dubai World Hospitality Championship 2014. The operetta included four different shows and performances, attracted huge participation from school children, youth and Emirati artists. The show displayed a colorful canvass that successfully captured the true essence of authentic Emirati hospitality and promoted unique heritage and culture of the UAE.

Four teams competed in day one of the “International Competition”, including Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan and Egypt to prepare the finest and most innovative Arabic and Gulf dishes in front of a jury of the most skilled and professional chefs and culinary experts.

The “Gulf Product Competition” received positive feedback as well based on the exceptional performance of the 308 participants who took part in the two main “Food Creations” and “Kits and Cooking Utensils” challenges. The broad participation from the Gulf made for a rich, diverse and excellent competition that highlighted the traditional flavors and culinary delights of the Gulf as well as its unique form of hospitality, all of which reflected the cultural heritage of the represented countries.

The “Emirati Competition” started off strong on the first day, showcasing the skills of 532 highly talented participants who competed in 4 categories; “Traditional Cooking,” “Professional, “Amateur,” and “Young.” In “Traditional Cooking,” the contestants prepare dishes reflecting the local style of cooking accentuated by Emirati real wood and ember flavors outdoors at the Heritage Village, one of the championship’s designated venues. “Professional” participants, on the other hand, made innovative renditions of various appetizers, main meals, and desserts. The “Amateur” category launched strongly with contestants aged 15 to 27. Children took to the limelight as well with their dazzling performance in the “Emirati” competition where they skillfully prepared sandwiches, decorated cakes and arranged dining tables.

The Hospitality Sector Competition brings together around 700 of DWHC’s total 2588 during the first day, which was marked by strong technical and aesthetic competition in various areas including ice, chocolate, fruit and sweets sculpting and wedding cake decoration.

Ahmed bin Hareb, President of DWHC, praised the performance of the participants comprising cooking and hospitality elite from the UAE, the GCC and the world. Bin Hareb pointed out that the enthusiasm, creativity, performance and professionalism shown by the participants on the first day confirms the successful efforts of the organizing committee to create a global platform for strengthening cultural ties through the culinary arts. He added that the manner in which Emirati and Gulf cooking and hospitality were showcased would help strengthen and preserve practices in these areas for future generations to enjoy.

Ahmed bin Hareb extended his thanks to HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and HH Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, for their unlimited support to DWHC.

“The 2nd DWHC is characterized by a wide participation of women and children. The first day drew our attention to the strong presence of young national talents who exhibited exceptional, creative, and unique cooking and hospitality skills. Through the competition we are eager to identify and celebrate promising Emirati talents and provide the necessary support for achieving excellence and success globally. We intend to continue representing the UAE in international events in the framework of joint cooperation with the “Hamdan Incubator Innovation”. We are confident that the next two days will see even more enthusiasm and competitiveness from the participants as they aim for the top,” added Bin Hareb.

For his part, Ahmed Sharif, Vice President of DWHC, said: “The first day of the competition proved the pioneering leadership of DWHC as a major local and international event specializing in the hospitality industry. The contests challenged Emirati, regional and international participants to provide the best and most innovative cooking and hospitality creations. The opening was also punctuated by the launching of the “Photography Competition” in collaboration with the “Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award” (HIPA). The competition aims to document the most prominent features of the tournament under the two themes of “Our Hospitality” reflecting the aesthetic aspects of hospitality and “Our Heritage” reflecting the rich heritage of the UAE.

Majid Al Marri, Director of DWHC’s hospitality sector and international competitions, emphasized the local, regional and international attention given to the Dubai World Hospitality Championship as the first global event to celebrate the local heritage of the UAE. He explained that the increased participation in the second edition reflects the growing confidence in the tournament as an ideal platform for celebrating the cultural aspects of hospitality, exploring promising culinary talents, and highlighting authentic Emirati hospitality globally.

“The strong performance of the participants during the first day attests to the effectiveness of our efforts over the past few months to train the participants and familiarize them with the safety and security requirements of the competitions. We organized a series of primer workshops which focused on improving the ability of the participants to meet the highest standards of safety, hygiene and quality while exhibiting the highest levels of creativity, innovation, and professionalism,” said Al Marri.

For her part, Amna Al Dhaheri, “Emirati Competition” Manager at DWHC, said: “The exceptional performance of the participants on the inaugural day heightens expectations of even more achievements over the next two days and right up to the coronation of the winners which represents an important opportunity for promising talents in to reach new levels of success and excellence. The “Emirati Competition” was marked by solid competition amidst a thrilling atmosphere. The “UAE Innovator team” is a distinctive feature of the “Emirati competition” which reflects our continuing efforts to invest in human resources and motivate citizens to highlight Emirati identity and heritage especially in cooking. Looking forward, we aim to reinforce the UAE’s status as a global hospitality hub.”

The three-day 2nd Dubai World Hospitality Championship is being organized by Za’abeel Palace Hospitality in cooperation with WACS and ECG with the support of Mohammed bin Rashid Establishment for SME Development, the Dubai Press Club, Emaar Properties, and Fly Dubai. The tournament is being held at Sheikh Saeed Halls 1, 2 and 3, and Arena of the Dubai World Trade Centre occupying a total area of ??25,000 square meters with the capacity to accommodate more than 10,000 visitors a day
