Iraq transportation ministry to float tenders for new airport

The Iraqi transport ministry is set to float a tender to attract foreign investment for a $1.5bn airport in the central province of Karbala, AK news has reported. Upon completion by 2015, the 45-sq km Furat al-Awsat Airport will have the capacity of 20 million passengers per year, said transport minister Hadi al-Amiri. "The airport will have the capacity for the largest number of tourists to the religious shrines [in Karbala]. The designs are ready and will be showed to the international companies, and in case there is no investor, then the Ministry of Transportation will take on its construction," al-Amiri said.
