Kuwait Airways to purchase 10 Boeing 777 jetliners

Kuwait Airways announced plan to purchase 10 Boeing 777 jetliners, reported local Arabic daily Al Qabas yesterday. The report, citing unnamed sources, said that the KAC Board of Directors has issued a directive and is in the initial stages of discussions with Boeing. The purchase is said to be proceeding at the ‘behest of the government’ and KAC officials are expected to meet soon with Boeing officials to discuss legal and technical matters, Kuwait Times reported. In a highly controversial move, KAC inked a $4.4bn deal to buy 25 aircraft from Airbus in February. The purchase, which included 10 A350-900 long-haul jets and 15 A320 neo aircraft – along with 12 more leased aircraft, seven A320s and five A330s – triggered outcries from various segments of Kuwait’s business elite, a parliamentary investigation into the contract process and criticism from some lawmakers. Kuwait Airways chairwoman Rasha Al Roumi said at the time that the airline signed the deal without any middlemen and managed to get a 10% discount during final negotiations.
