Complex Made Simple

Muriya showcases Oman’s largest integrated tourism complexes at ITB 2014

Muriya, Oman’s leading tourism development company, exhibited at this year’s International Tourism Bourse (ITB), which took place in Berlin from 5-9th March, showcasing Jebel Sifah and Salalah Beach, the two largest Integrated Tourism Complexes (ITCs) in Oman. Muriya was the first and only private company from Oman to participate and occupied a 23 square metre exhibition space opposite Oman Air and the Ministry of Tourism to promote the Sultanate.

Hamza Selim, CEO of Muriya said, “Muriya is Oman’s largest developer of tourism assets and ITB Berlin provided us with a unique opportunity to showcase our flagship resorts and promote the destinations to business travellers and international tour operators, as well as offering a unique insight into the global tourism industry from the world’s leading think tank. Our participation in an event of this scale, with such wide exposure, solidifies Muriya’s position as one of the major developers in Oman and in the world, and will help to further increase the influence of tourism on the national economy.”

Selim added, “The Ministry of Tourism recently announced that Oman’s tourism industry grew by 10% in 2013, with 2.1 million tourists visiting the Sultanate. Visitors from within Oman and the wider GCC region grew by almost 33% last year, while European visitors to Oman grew by 16.7%. ITB Berlin is vital in promoting the country to overseas tourists. The new Rotana Salalah Resort will form one of the major attractions at our landmark Salalah Beach Complex and is due to become fully operational before the start of the Khareef season when visitors from across the region flock to Salalah to enjoy Gulf’s only tropical destination.”

Jebel Sifah is set in a private enclave just a 45 minute drive through the Al Hajar Mountains from Muscat with the Sifawy Boutique Hotel serving guests in the heart of the onsite Marina. At the centre of the development is a charming Marina Town built around Oman’s first inland marina. Once complete, the destination will feature an 18-hole PGA standard Golf Course and a selection of luxury resorts operated by the world’s leading hotel companies, Four Seasons, Missoni, Banyan Tree and Angsana.
Salalah Beach Resort faces the Indian Ocean and will offer guests an experience unique to Oman. The Juweira Boutique Hotel is already open, with Rotana Salalah Resort opening shortly. The completed destination will also offer world class resorts operated by Club Med and Mövenpick to complement a selection of restaurants and cafés as well as two PGA golf courses. Each development offers guests a relaxing getaway at luxury accommodation while enjoying the many onsite restaurants, retail outlets and leisure facilities. Both projects are set to play an important role in the growth of the Sultanate’s tourism industry and position the country as a regional hub for corporate retreats and business tourism.

The global Travel and Tourism industry accounts for over 258 million jobs around the world and is valued at US$ 6 trillion. The sector represents a key driver for worldwide investment and economic growth, contributing 6.6% to Oman’s national GDP of Oman 2012, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Ministry of Tourism has recently announced plans for a new tourism strategy with the aim of increasing GDP contribution to 10% by 2020.

First opened in 1966, ITB Berlin is the leading B2B-Platform in the tourism industry, attracting more than 170,000 visitors each year, including 113,000 trade visitors and 11,000 companies from 180 countries, as well as over 6000 journalists and 50 fifty foreign ministers. During this year’s four day event, participants had the opportunity to take part in a wide range discussions, workshops and lectures covering topics such as ‘Social Media and Mobile Travel Services’.
