Oman to toughen traffic penalties

Oman has amended its traffic law to penalise violators with heftier fines and jail terms, Times of Oman has reported. Under the amended legislation, offences like reckless driving, over-speeding, wrong overtaking, driving on the shoulders of roads, or using cell phones while driving will land drivers in jail ranging from 10 days to three months. “This will reduce major accidents in which people get killed or maimed for life on Omani roads,” a member of the legal committee of sultanate’s Majlis Al Shura was quoted as saying.
