Saudi rail boss fired over train derailing incident

King Abdullah has relieved Abdul Aziz Al-Huqail from his responsibilities as president of the Saudi Railways Organization (SRO), after a Riyadh-bound train derailed last week injuring about 35 passengers, Saudi Gazette has reported. Meanwhile, a joint investigation team formed by the SRO and the General Commission of Railway Safety has said the accident occurred because power cables on the railway tracks had been stolen. "Some unidentified people stole the optical fibre cables that link the special control system of the railway tracks between Dammam and Riyadh, causing the damage to the system that resulted in the failure of the switching devices to respond to commands," an unnamed official was quoted as saying.
