Science catching up with science-fiction

Shared data will transform many industries, including healthcare and retail, and will also accelerate scientific research and change the way we live.

15 years ago, wrist-mounted computers, jet packs, self-driving cars, 3D printers, laser lighting and 3D hologram projectors were the main technological devices that would represent a science-fiction movie.


Nowadays, however, we are living in a time where science-fiction is no longer considered fiction. At IFA 2015, one of the world’s leading trade shows for consumer electronics and technology applications, technology was brought to life, and the futuristic devices of our favourite sci-fi movies were launched; which brought me to think of a vital question, were those devices “smart?”


Today, devices need to be able to access and encrypt information on the internet in a language that all other devices can read in order to be considered “smart,” bringing us to the concept of The Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the new and upcoming “fiction.” It is made up of billions of “smart” devices – ranging from miniscule chips to mammoth machines that use wireless technology to talk to each other – and to us!


It is my opinion that this shared data will transform many industries, including healthcare and retail, and will also accelerate scientific research and change the way we live.


The IoT world is growing at a spectacular pace, from two billion objects in 2006 to a projected 200 billion by 2020, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). Moreover, Strategy Analytics M2M and McKinsey Global Institute reported the total global worth of IoT technology could be as much as $6.2 trillion by 2025, with most of that value coming from devices in health care ($2.5 trillion) and manufacturing ($2.3 trillion).


It is important to correct the misconception that majority of the IoT smart devices will be focused on consumer electronics; IoT smart devices will actually be allocated in factories, businesses and healthcare as well, changing the way humanity lives.


The growth rate in which IoT will be implemented in companies, factories, hospitals and governments will highlight the technology adaption rate for the entity or the country. However, you do not have to wait for IoT to be implemented in your life in order to take advantage of it.
