HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Director General, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority unveiled the UIM F1 H20 World Powerboat Championship, the Sharjah Grand Prix, to be held on December 18 and 19 in Khalid Lagoon, in the presence of UIM promoter Nicolo Di San Germano, participating world champions and local and international media.
Welcoming international teams and media, Al Midfa expressed the Authority’s pleasure in hosting the F1 H20 World Powerboat Championship for the 15th consecutive year, emphasising that the Sharjah Grand Prix has emerged as one of the major sporting events in the region. The grand finale of the UIM F1 H20 Powerboat Championship is the highlight of the Sharjah Water Festival which every year brings with it a host of exciting, world-class activities and entertainment for the whole family.
Al Midfa said: that “The World Powerboat Championship, the Sharjah Grand Prix, which is being held in the picturesque Khalid Lagoon once again, has registered tremendous success over the past few years and is eagerly awaited by motorsports enthusiasts and the people of Sharjah and UAE.” He stressed: that “This success couldn’t have been achieved without the continuous support and patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.”
The SCTDA Director General said: that “Since the beginning of this year Sharjah has been the focus of attention across the Arab and Islamic world thanks to special events and activities marking the emirate’s crowning as the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014. Al Midfa said that the successful hosting of events like the World Powerboat Championship have brought Sharjah this international recognition and honour.”
Al Midfa emphasised: that “The year ahead will also be a year of celebrations with the Authority joining other Sharjah government entities in celebrating the emirate’s selection as the Capital of Arab Tourism for 2015 with a number of outstanding events and activities that shine the light on Sharjah’s tourist and cultural attractions.” “The World Powerboat Championship organised by the SCTDA is one of the most prominent events hosted by Sharjah and reinforces the emirate’s status as a leading destination for family festivals and international sporting events such as the Sharjah Water Festival, Sharjah Grand Prix, Sharjah Light Festival and other quality events,” added Al Midfa.
Mr Nicolo di San Germano, the global promoter of the UIM Formula One racing, praised the Authority’s successful organisation of the Championship for the last 15 years. Praising the race arrangements, strict safety regulations, quality of services and cooperation provided by the SCTDA and the Sharjah government over the years, San Germano said that Khalid Lagoon is a perfect venue to host the Grand Finale of the World Championship.
The much awaited Sharjah race promises lots of excitement and thrills this year with the top three drivers — Philip Chiappe from France, Alex Carella and Shaun Torrente (both representing Qatar) — fighting for the Crown.
According to UIM’s final World Championship Points Table, 2014, Philippe Chiappe from the French team is currently ahead of the pack with a total of 50 points. Alex Carella, who led his team to World Championship victory last year, comes second with 47 points. Shaun Torrente representing the same team with 44 points is not far behind. The Sharjah Grand Prix which will determine the final World Champion certainly promises lots of fun and surprises.
