Residents and international visitors are all set to witness another spectacular Sharjah Grand Prix, the UIM F1 H20 World Powerboat Championship, this weekend with the best of the best Formula 1 racers and world champions bringing the Khalid Lagoon alive with their incredible feats and thrills.
HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority today formally unveiled the 14th edition of the UIM F1H20 World Powerboat Championship, to be held on December 12 and 13 in Khalid Lagoon, in the presence of UIM F1 Powerboat Championship promoter Nicolo Di San Germano and participating world champions and teams.
Addressing a Press conference at Hilton Sharjah, Al Midfa said that the Authority is proud to host the grand finale of the UIM F1H2O World Championship 2013, the Sharjah Grand Prix, for the 14th year in a row. He said that the UIM F1H20 World Powerboat Championship is not just the high point of the annual Sharjah Water Festival but an event that is eagerly awaited every year by sport lovers, motor racing enthusiasts and people from all over the world.
“Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, the Championship is rightly a source of pride to all of us in Sharjah and the UAE,” he said.
Continuing the tradition of the past several years, the Powerboat Championship is being held in sync with the Sharjah Water Festival, which is being held from December 11th to 21st. It is one of the most popular family events and fun festivals in the region attracting thousands of visitors every year, he said.
Referring to Sharjah’s celebrations as the Capital of Islamic Culture in the Year 2014 by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Al Midfa said: “This is a huge honour and another feather in the Emirate’s cap under the visionary leadership of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.”
Al Midfa said the Year 2014 will be a year of grand celebrations with the SCTDA joining other Sharjah government entities in hosting a number of special events and activities to mark the great honour and celebrating this beautiful Emirate of ours.
“With our world-class festivals and events like the SWF, the Sharjah Light Festival and by being part of major international tourism and trade exhibitions, the Authority has been pursuing a long-term strategy to promote and showcase Sharjah’s offerings and its tourism and hospitality sectors at various levels,” said Al Midfa. He emphasised that the success in organising an international event like the Sharjah Grand Prix greatly helps to showcase the Emirate’s suitability as a venue for more such international events

He also thanked the Abu Dhabi Marine Sports Club and Nicolo Di San Germano, the UIM F1H2O World Championship promoter, and members of media for their continuing support.
Meanwhile all the participating teams in the Championship have arrived in Sharjah and have been rehearsing and preparing for the big action in Khalid Lagoon on Thursday and Friday. A number of international media and experts have arrived to cover the grand event. A fully equipped media center with all modern facilities has been set up on the terrace of Sharjah Hilton.
It is worth noting that at a press conference on December 4, the SCTDA announced the details of the Sharjah Water Festival, being held from December 11 to 21 at Al Majaz Park overlooking the Khalid Lagoon.
The Water Festival this year includes a number of never-before-seen international attractions and fun and entertainment shows. Al Majaz Park, the venue, has been divided into three zones – Adventures Zone, Fun Zone and Children’s Zone.
Diving, which includes acrobatic feats over water, Ice Rink, the UAE’s biggest outdoor ice rink, Ice Age, Skate Park, Roaming Musicians and Carnival are some of the attractions on offer besides lots of other fun and games and heritage activities.
