Emirates Islamic and Emirates NBD have announced new and innovative customized services with the launch of "chat banking" that allows customers to conduct daily banking services via WhatsApp, marking a global first in the Islamic banking sector and a first in the region, respectively.

The Chat Banking solution, supported by Infobip, is an easy-to-use secure channel that allows customers to carry out daily banking functions on the go. This includes the ability to check account balances and temporarily block or unblock existing cards.

"The introduction of Chat Banking services via WhatsApp is part of our long-term strategy to shift the majority of our transactions towards mobile and online channels. As part of our commitment to bringing banking innovation to UAE customers, we have introduced several ‘first to market’ solutions – we were the first Islamic bank in the country to launch a mobile banking app and the first to provide three major wallets, namely Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay to our customers,” said Suhail Bin Tarraf, Chief Operating Officer at Emirates Islamic.

“With customers increasingly turning to online and mobile banking services, Emirates NBD's Chat Banking via WhatsApp solution builds on our commitment to making banking easy and intuitive. WhatsApp is a simple, reliable and private way to talk to anyone in the world, which will lend further convenience to banking with Emirates NBD," said Suvo Sarkar, Senior Executive Vice President, Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management, Emirates NBD.

Tangible innovation and security

With close to a million and a half followers on social media, Emirates NBD remains the only financial institution from the Middle East to claim a spot in the Top 20 ranking in the 'Power 100 Social Media Rankings' compiled by The Financial Brand.

Both Emirate Islamic and Emirates NBD have successfully integrated their core systems with the WhatsApp Business solution. All messages on their verified WhatsApp Business accounts are encrypted, ensuring confidentiality and security. To ensure a safe and secure banking experience, customers should always check for the green badge next to the banks' names on the chat.

"As Emirates NBD forges ahead with its digitization agenda, we look forward to progressively expanding our range of WhatsApp based services to deliver a unified, digital experience for our customers,” said Abdulla Qassem, Group Chief Operating Officer, Emirates NBD.

To subscribe to this service, customers are requested to SMS ‘WhatsApp’ to 4451 (for Emirates Islamic bank) or 4456 (for Emirates NBD bank) using their registered mobile number or, alternatively, they can subscribe through mobile or online banking.
