The expansion of its C-level management team is part of Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies’ ongoing strategy to target a $800m revenue stream by 2012, which through its own client provision policy, is actively working to strengthen the UAE capital’s status as a rapidly emerging aviation centre of excellence.
Speaking on the recent appointments, John Byers, CEO, Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies, which is wholly-owned by Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala), said
“After repositioning Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies from the former Gulf Aircraft Maintenance Company (GAMCO) in November 2007, we set ourselves the aim of becoming one of the most sought after MRO providers in the EMEA region. We are now well on the way to achieving this.
In Col Al Shamsi, Matta and Lewis, we have obtained a wide breadth of experience and talent, which will bring a new dimension to the company’s offering.
Their combined knowledge pool and expertise will be a critical factor in driving growth and enhancing our overall service offering to meet a wide range of clients’ needs.
UAE national Col. Al Shamsi, who began working with Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies and formerly GAMCO in an advisory role from 1989-92 on the Gazelle Helicopter Overhaul initiative, has been tasked with building the company’s overall military MRO offering, with an initial focus on enhancing the capability of the MRO services provided to the UAE Air Force.
Having joined the country’s air force in 1992 as Maintenance Officer for the AH64 Apache Programme, Col Al Shamsi worked on the programme for 11 years before being posted to Turkey as part of the UAE’s Block F-16 training project.
After a two year stint, he returned to the UAE in 2005 as Chief Engineer for the air forces’ F16 Block 60 programme, which he led until joining Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies this year.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering from St. Louis University, Parks College, USA, and is an F.A.A. Approved License Holder (Power Plant & Airframe).
Matta joins the company as CFO from Unilever, where he operated as Finance Manager.
He oversaw all financial operations, including the restructuring of the logistics department and development of tools to control distribution costs, for the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant’s core portfolio of brands.
Starting his career as a Mechanical Engineer at Caterpillar, Inc., he worked on the design of engines and engine components of earth-moving equipments. He is the owner of many inventions, seven of which were patented in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
Matta also spent a number of years in the Executive Leadership/Finance & Treasury department at Toys R Us’ Global Headquarters, where he played a key role in the analysis and implementation of special projects including capital structure optimisation, and the restructuring of all divisions.
He holds an MBA degree from University of Chicago and Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Houston. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charter holder.
Lewis joins Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies from Temasys International – a leading business consultancy based in Singapore.
As Managing Director, Lewis focused on providing ERP solutions to Airline and MRO clients and providing strategic advice on business process outsourcing (BPO) and Information Technology Operations (ITO) in emerging markets.
With an extensive background in supplying enterprise solutions and business transformation service across the globe, Lewis’ in-depth knowledge and experience – acquired from a 35 year career spanning America, Europe and Asia – has confirmed his reputation as one of the leading experts on this field.
Abu Dhabi Aircraft Technologies is positioned to be the largest independent MRO provider in the Middle East and a major player in India and Europe.
With leading-edge technologies and a favorable cost structure, it will provide shorter turnaround times through total maintenance solutions and classic MRO services for commercial and military airframe, engines and components.
