American Express appoints Group Head to manage and drive its commercial card products and services

In a move to strengthen its Commercial Card (Corporate Products) business, American Express Middle East today announced the appointment of Mark Turner as Group Head Commercial Products, Middle East and North Africa.

In his new role, Turner will focus on re-structuring the company’s Commercial Cards business and introducing new payment solutions.

Turner has over 15 years of experience in managing American Express Corporate Cards franchise and travel services across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Prior to joining American Express in the Middle East, Turner provided consultancy services to several financial and non-financial companies, advising on business restructuring and acquisitions.

Commenting on his appointment, Turner said: “I am extremely pleased to join American Express in the Middle East at a time when it is experiencing remarkable growth in the region; we intend to capitalise on this growth and strengthen our operations in the Commercial Cards and B2B payment solutions.

“Currently, the Commercial Cards business contributes to over 25 per cent of American Express Middle East billings, and we will continue to further build on this. With additional focus and new product deployment in the corporate arena, we aim to double our billed business in the next three years, quadruple resources and launch new market-centric initiatives to drive our growth strategy.”

In 2007, results reported American Express show significant growth across all of its global businesses as it capitalises on the shift away from traditional cash and cheques in all business segments including consumers, small businesses and corporates. This contributed to the rise of its worldwide Commercial Card proprietary business by 14 per cent.

Turner added that Corporate Cards and B2B products play a crucial role in supporting the fast-growing travel and entertainment industry in the Middle East. “With several global and regional companies expanding their operations across the Middle East region, American Express is set to introduce new payment solutions for these entities as well as business and the travel and entertainment sector in the region,” he added.

Turner has over 25 years experience in the financial services industry. He holds a MBA from the University of Hull, United Kingdom. He has been honoured by the University of Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China, by receiving a chair and Professorship (Hon) within the Sino-French College.
