Dr. Salem Alshafiei appointed as Managing Director for Dubai Real Estate Institute

The Dubai Real Estate Institute (DREI), the region's first academic institute for real estate studies, today announced the appointment of Dr. Salem Alshafiei as the new Managing Director.

An industry veteran, academician and an expert with over 15 years of experience, Dr. Alshafiei brings to DREI his extensive professional expertise in technical and managerial urban planning.

Accepting the new role, Dr. Alshafiei said: “It is a privilege to be chosen for the challenging position to lead Dubai Real Estate Institute. I am looking forward to utilising my competencies to contribute to the holistic development of DREI and the real estate sector in the region”.

Prior to joining DREI, Dr. Alshafiei served as advisor to the Dubai Statistics Centre (DSC), providing recommendations for its overall development, while personally developing the organizational structure, and analyzing and documenting main roles and responsibilities.

He also guided the preparation of the DSC Strategic Plan 2008-2010, and a three year staffing plan for the company.

His mandate also extended to facilitating DSC’s institutional capability building and the development of a customer-oriented work culture.

From November 2005 to October 2007, Dr. Alshafiei was Director of Strategic Transportation Planning Department at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

During his tenure, he supervised the preparation of Dubai’s first strategic comprehensive Multimodal Integrated Transportation plan, and the Dubai Emirate Mobility Management Strategy, Bicycle Master Plan, Comprehensive Parking Study, Dubai Toll Study, Comprehensive Transportation Legislation, and Special Needs Accessibility Strategy.

As Director of Traffic Engineering and Road Safety Department with Dubai Police Headquarters from October 2001 to November 2005, Dr. Alshafiei led a team that delivered the first Regional Traffic and Safety Strategy.

Joining Dubai Municipality in September 1993 as an urban planner, he rose to the position of Head of the Comprehensive Planning Unit.

Later, as Head of the Planning Studies Section, he assisted in preparing a comparative long range organizational planning for Dubai (1992-2012), and a comprehensive plan for developing the Hatta region.

In addition to his corporate responsibilities, Dr. Alshafiei has contributed to the setting up of the Institute of Urban Planning and Design (IUPD) at the American University of Sharjah (AUS).

Since 2002 he has served at AUS as an adjunct Assistant Professor, teaching Urban Planning and Urban Housing Policy.

A member of the American Urban Planning Association, Dr. Alshafiei’s proficiency in transportation planning and policy analysis won him the Dubai Government Excellence Programme Award in the category of Distinguished Employee in Specialized Professions.

Dr. Alshafiei holds a bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning from Alabama A & M University, US, and a Master’s in Urban Planning from the University of Wales at Cardiff, UK. He has also received a Ph.D. in Urban Planning, with a focus on Housing Policy, from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
