ICAEW (The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales) has appointed Michael Armstrong FCA as Regional Director for the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA). Michael will be responsible for leading ICAEW’s Middle East regional team as its remit expands to include Africa and South Asia. This will include engaging with business across the region, supporting ICAEW members, working with governments on public finance and accountancy matters and continuing to encourage the growth of strong national professional accountancy organisations which will provide attractive careers for citizens.

Commenting on his appointment, Michael, said, “This is a very exciting time to be joining ICAEW. I am looking forward to building on the success of the Middle East office, which has established strong partnerships across the Gulf and helped raise awareness and drive recognition of the profession as a key contributor to economic growth. ICAEW is already recognised as a strong champion of national professions evidenced by its capacity-building work in Africa, working in partnership with national organisations to help strengthen the profession. The accountancy and finance profession underpins business confidence, public financial management and economic growth worldwide, and it is an excellent time to be taking up the Regional Director role.”

“Over the last few years ICAEW has supported initiatives by governments of the Gulf States to encourage their citizens to gain professional accountancy qualifications, as well as raising awareness of the importance of the accountancy and finance profession to economic growth. As trade and markets become more globalised, the importance of internationally-recognised professionals such as ICAEW Chartered Accountants will grow as governments seek to promote the highest professional, technical and ethical standards. I am looking forward to building increased awareness of the benefits of becoming and working with chartered accountants. But I am most excited about the opportunity to meet and engage with ICAEW members and firms in the business, professional practice and public sectors, together with policy makers, universities, students and other stakeholders as we continue to invest further in ICAEW’s brand and reputation,” he added.

Vernon Soare, ICAEW Executive Director, said, “We are delighted to welcome Michael Armstrong as the new Regional Director for ICAEW’s Middle East, Africa and South Asia region. With over three decades’ experience in the profession and in the region he brings with him a wealth of expertise and understanding of the issues faced by business and the public sector. We are very proud of what ICAEW’s regional office in the Middle East has achieved since its inception, as well as our work to support a strong profession in Africa and across South Asia, and we are confident that Michael is well-equipped to lead ICAEW in the next stage of development in the region.”
