Oman proposes raising minimum salaries

Oman's Shura Council has proposed raising the minimum salaries of citizens working in the private sector to OR350 from the current OR200, Times of Oman has reported. According to official figures, a total 1,74,440 Omani nationals were working in the private sector until last April, 73% of whom receive salaries under OR300. The Shura Council also recommended that private sector employees who earn less than OR500 should get a bank loan without interest and land plots to encourage young Omanis to work in the private sector. "We have also recommended that job opportunities of the locals should be raised to 50,000 jobs in 2013 from 36,000 in 2012," said Talal Al Matroshi, Shura Council member of Shinas.
