Sewage company to charge for services

The government-owned Abu Dhabi Sewage Services Company plans to introduce sewage service charges in the next 12 months, the firm's managing director Alan Thomson has told MEED's Wastewater Treatment & Reuse 2007 conference in Abu Dhabi. "We have put several proposals to my board," Thomson said. "I expect to introduce charges in 2008."

At present, the costs of the ADSSC, which owns and operates the entire Abu Dhabi sewerage disposal and treatment system, are covered by subsidies from the Abu Dhabi government.

Privatisation plans include awarding concessions for two major sewage treatment plants in Abu Dhabi and Al-Ain to joint ventures between private investors and the Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA).
