The UAE – especially Dubai – is considered a shopper’s paradise. With Ramadan, summer and Eid holidays coming up, wallets will tighten as trips home mean loads of shopping for family and friends. And vacationing at exotic locales definitely calls for a wardrobe update.
But don’t worry, the government of Dubai is here to your rescue: a mega three-day super sale is on. More than 750 retailers across the emirate – more than 250 brands – have slashed prices, knocking between 30 per cent and 90 per cent off products.
3-day Super Sale
Organised by the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), part of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism), the 3-day Super Sale has been offering shoppers discounts ranging from 30 per cent to 90 per cent off on selected items at retailers across the city. The sale will cover diverse business segments from apparel to electronics, jewellery to fashion accessories, homeware, toys, and much more.
Saeed Mohammad Measam Al Falasi, Executive Director, Retail and Strategic Alliances, DFRE, says, “The 3-Day Super Sale initiative is part of our robust strategy revolving around the Retail Calendar to further boost the emirate’s retail sector with regular promotional periods that benefit both retailers and shoppers. Running promotions that offer retailers numerous options to boost sales during this time of the year will further enhance the emirate’s appeal as a year-round shopping hub, and helps us build on Dubai’s strong position as only the second city after London to host the most number of retail brands.”
One of the reasons it has been scheduled for the month of May is that it would help retailers clear their existing merchandise before they stock up on the new seasonal fashions as well as increase the buying power of the consumers before the commencement of the crucial Ramadan – Eid – summer season.
The flipside to this great news is that one can no longer expect massive discount sales at other times of the year. The word is that large discounts will be offered only two times in a year – the 3-day Super Sale and the National Day Sale in December. Retailers will not be allowed to offer major stock clearance discounts at other times of the year. The only exception is if a store or brand is either shutting down or closing the brand at that specific location, at which point in time, it can put up a clearance sale provided the DED has already cancelled the shop’s license.
A report by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry forecasts consumer spending to continue rising in the medium-term, with growth rates projected to stabilise at approximately four per cent on average per year leading to a total spending of more than AED750 billion by 2017 across many segments. Meanwhile, retailing is forecast to reach AED200 billion by 2017, growing an average of five per cent each year.
